The Bronx's Eddie "E-Boy" Gomez won a unanimous decision over Puerto Rico's John Karl Sosa in the scheduled ten round Boxeo Estelar on Estrella TV welterweight main event from the Fantasy Springs Resort & Casino Events Center in Indio, California. Exchanging inside Sosa tagged Gomez solidly in round two. The fighting continued at a high fast pace on the inside with Gomez landing combos and Sosa snapping away his punches at a distance.
Past the halfway point Gomez landed combinations as Sosa boxed extending his punches. Gomez appeared to hurt Sosa momentarily in round eight. The ninth round saw Gomez box well landing combinations as Sosa chased connecting with the straight right. The tenth and final round Gomez was highly active as Sosa continued his constant punch output the two battled it out to the final round.
Judges scored the bout 98-92, 96-94, and 96-94 as Eddie Gomez wins unanimous decision improving to 19-1, 11 KO's. John Karl Sosa goes to 13-2, 6 KO's.
Fidel "The Atrisco Kid" Maldonado Jr. of Albuquerque, New Mexico and Glendale, California's Art "Lionheart" Hovhannisyan went the distance in the ten-round lightweight co-main event. From the opening bell both exchanged as Hovhannisyan landed the right numerous times in round one. In round three Hovhannisyan and Maldonado exchanged wildly as the brawling continued through five rounds. Hovhannisyan pressured as the southpaw Maldonado circled the ring elusively popping the jab.
Halfway through Maldonado taunted Hovhannisyan later in the round the Armenian fighter turned his back as Maldonado continued to punch. Exchanging wildly in the center of the ring in round eight Hovhannisyan went down from a body shot by Maldonado. Hovhannisyan pressured in round nine as the fight was close Maldonado boxed keeping his distance. The tenth and final round Hovhannisyan continued to pressure sensing the urgency with Maldonaldo staying away boxing.
In the end the judges scored the bout 96-92, 95-93, and 94-94 as the bout was declared a draw. Fidel Maldonado goes to 21-3-1, 18 KO's as Art Hovhannisyan goes to 17-2-3, 9 KO's.
Riverside's Joseph "Diamante" Aguirre won a technical decision over Rony Alvarado of Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. A clash of heads opened up a cut on Alvarado's right eye in round three, Aguirre continued to attack the tough Alvarado who continued to bleed from his cut. The referee then waived the bout at after consulting with the ringside physician as all three judges scored the bout
Joseph Aguirre stays undefeated improving to 13-0, 8 KO's. Rony Alvarado goes to 9-8, 5 KO's.
Other Bouts
Jesus Sanchez (1-0, 1 KOs) of Indio, California and Livan "Machine Gun" Navarro (2-0) of Havana, Cuba stopped Jesus Sanchez of Indio, California in a four-round welterweight bout. Sanchez had a mouse on his right eye in round one as Navarro boxed away. However a left hand by Sanchez in round two dropped Navarro. Navarro landed effectively in round three as Sanchez clinched most of the round however the corner stopped the fight as the referee stepped in to waive it at 2:14.
Livan Navarro goes to 3-0, 1 KO. Jesus Sanchez goes to 1-1, 1 KO.
In the opening bout from the Fantasy Springs Resort &Casino Events Center super middleweight D'Mitrius Ballard of Maryland stopped Victor Fonseca of Tijuana. Referee deducted a point from Ballard in round three for hitting below the belt as Fonseca went down, shortly after Fonseca's corner signaled to the referee to stop the fight at 1:42 of round three.
