WBA super middleweight World Champion Armando “Toro” Reséndiz of Nayarit, Mexico is ready for his Mexican showdown against Tijuana’s former world champion Jaime Munguía. Resendiz vs. Munguia goes down Saturday, May 2 as the co-feature bout as the card will be headlined by David Benavidez vs. Zurdo Ramirez live on PBC Pay-Per-View on Prime Video from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
“I feel motivated. It’s an important fight this fight represents a lot,” Armando Resendiz told Fightnews.com “Mexican fans will come out with the victory,” Resendiz added.
Coming off the biggest win of his career, Resendiz stopped former world champion Caleb Plant last year to capture the interim title. Following the victory, Resendiz was later elevated to full WBA super middleweight champion as he gets set for the first defense of his title.
“It was a key victory, and it got me here. I credit the preparation with coach Manny. He has a good eye, he sees what we need to work and improve on, taking advantage of a fighter/opponent,” Resendiz said.
Having prepared with his coach Manny Robles, this will be their second camp together as they hooked up last year. Hooking up with the respected trainer that guided Andy Ruiz Jr. to become the first Mexican heavyweight world champion. Wrapping up a successful camp at the Knockouts Gym in South Gate, California in preparation for the showdown with Munguia.
“Coach Manny gives good advice and always correcting on what I need to improve on to get better. He is a motivator and the stable is great, to be surrounded by a lot of good fighters is good,” Resendiz on working with Manny Robles. “The preparation has been great, working with Manny Robles. I’m adding some arsenal in this camp to come well prepared and ready for whatever in the ring come May 2nd,” Resendiz added.
For his opponent Munguia it’s the road back to the top. Having suffered his first defeat back in December of 2024 when he was knocked out by the undefeated Bruno Surace in his hometown of Tijuana. Munguia would go ahead and avenge his defeat 6 months later as he won a unanimous decision over Surace. The thrill of victory didn’t last long too long for Munguia as he would test positive for traces of exogenous testosterone. However, Munguia was cleared of wrongdoing after his positive test result was caused by unintentional contamination with pregnenolone, a legal, non-banned substance. It’s a case of getting the monkey of his back coming into his fight with Resendiz.
“Going up against Jaime Munguia is a big test. He is a great fighter, tough, strong, with a lot of heart. He brings the experience and he represents a challenge in my career,” Resendiz on Jaime Munguia. “He will come well prepared with a lot to prove,”
This is the perfect matchup and opportunity for the champ Resendiz as the co-feature bout on a Cinco De Mayo pay per view event. It has been a long boxing tradition dating back to Julio Cesar Chavez headlining the festive weekend to Oscar De La Hoya, Floyd Mayweather Jr., and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez it’s a boxing weekend a Mexican fighter dreams being part of.
“I’m happy to be given the opportunity to be fighting on this festive fight card. These are important dates to be fighting on, it’s a big card filled with my fellow Mexican’s,” Resendiz said about fighting the Cinco De Mayo weekend. “This is a dream to be fighting someone I watched from the beginning of my career. This opportunity represents a lot,”
There is more than just the opportunity of fighting on a mega card as the champ Resendiz already finds himself at the mix at 168. A win over Munguia, will give Resendiz back-to-back wins against top tier opposition and catapult Resendiz to the top of the division. Notable names at super middleweight includes WBC champion Christian Mbilli, WBC interim champ Lester Martinez, undefeated top rated Hamzah Sheeraz, Diego Pacheco, Osley Iglesias, and Jermall Charlo.
“A win over Jaime changes a lot of things in my career. All for the best, I’m hoping everything comes out in my favor,” Resendiz said.
The biggest prize in the super middleweight division would be the big fight against Canelo as the Mexican superstar is slated to return in September to headline Mexico Against the World from Riyadh on Mexican Independence Day weekend. No official opponent has been set for Canelo but the potential for a Mexican showdown is not out of the question.
“I’m open to any fight but first thing is first and it’s this fight. If all goes well, I’m open to any fight,” Resendiz stated.
With the fight a little over a week away, Resendiz remains adamant of victory against his countrymate Munguia. Theres no taking Munguia lightly or looking ahead as this fight represents everything for “El Toro” Resendiz.
“There is so much on the line in this fight for me. The fact that he is a big name, a victory here takes me on another journey,” Resendiz said.
Anticipating a tough battle against Munguia, Resendiz promises to leave it all in the ring.
“Expect a war. I don’t see this fight going any other way it’s a fight where we both have heart and going for everything,”
