Brandon Figueroa KO's Luis Nery in Seven to Unify

Undefeated super bantamweight champion Brandon “Heartbreaker” Figueroa (23-0-1, 18 KOs) of Weslaco, Texas was victorious Saturday night by knocking out Luis Nery (31-1, 24 KO's) in unifying the WBA/WBC titles, headlining in a Premier Boxing Champions on Showtime Championship Boxing at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California.

It was a battle for while it lasted as Figueroa and Nery traded on the inside. During an exchange in the seventh Figueroa connected Nery with a left hook to the rib cage area sending him to the canvas as he was out for the count referee Thomas Taylor stopped the fight.

Former unified super bantamweight champion Danny Roman (28-3-1, 10 KOs) of Los Angeles was in a tough fight as he won a unanimous decision over Tijuana’s Ricardo Espinoza (25-3, 21 KOs) in the featherweight co-feature bout. It was a dominant performance but Espinoza was tough in being bloodied showing tremendous heart in going the distance. Scores were 98-92, 98-92, and 97-93.

Undefeated super featherweight Xavier Martinez (17-0, 11 KOs) of Sacramento won a tough and hard fought unanimous decision over former world title challenger Juan Carlos Burgos (34-5, 21 KOs) of Tijuana in opening-up the Showtime telecast. It was a battle and some rounds were fought but for some reason all three judges scored the bout 99-91.

Lightweight Jose Valenzuela (8-0, 5 KOs) of Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico scored a first round knockout over Nelson Hampton (7-4, 4 KOs) of Texas.

Making her debut Gabriela Fundora (1-0), the younger sister of super welterweight Sebastian Fundora. Won a decision over Jazmin Medina. Scoring a knockdown in the fight, Fundora worked her way to a decision. All three judges scored the fight 40-35.

Super lightweight Justin Cardona (5-0, 3 KOs) of Salinas, California scored a first round knockout over James De Herrera.
