Fernando Vargas Jr. Scores KO Stays Undefeated

Undefeated super welterweight Fernando Vargas Jr. (17-0, 15 KOs), son of former world champion Fernando Vargas, stopped Gonzalo Coria (23-8, 9 KOs) in the fourth round in headlining a MarvNation card on Saturday night at Thunder Studios in Long Beach, California.


Vargas had a tough task from the opening bell as Coria pressed looking to make the most out of it. In the second, Vargas was on his feet boxing as Coria kept pressing the action. Exchanging in the center in the fourth, a hard right by Vargas staggered Coria and send him to the canvas. Coria got up but referee Raul Caiz Jr waved off the bout. Time was 1:44.

In the co-feature bout of the evening, Nathan Rodriguez (19-0, 13 KOs) scored a fifth round technical decision over Carlos Buitrago (39-15-1, 23 KOs) of Nicaragua.

Orange County super welterweights Bryan Flores (20-2, 6 KOs) of Orange, California and Jesus Gonzalez (7-4-1, 2 KOs) of Santa Ana, California squared off. It was back and forth throughout the bout as Gonzalez started aggressive but Flores made the adjustments necessary. It was a hard fought battle from both Flores and Gonzalez . After completing six rounds, the judges scored the bout 59-55, 58-56, and 57-57.

Super middleweight Ethan Smith (3- 0, 3 KOs) scored a second round knockout over Terrence Coleman (0-1). Smith attacked and backed Coleman to the ropes as he stuck his head out of the ring, forcing 5e referee to rule a standing eight count. The fight continued but Smith finished off Coleman with a knockdown as the referee stopped the fight at 2:17 of round two.

Lightweight Juan Fonseca (3-0, 1 KO) of Manteca, California won a unanimous decision over Clayton Hibbert (2-7, 2 KOs). It was a fast paced fight more flash than punching as Fonseca and Hibbert sized one another. Hibbert awkward style was giving Fonseca fits as he connected with a low blow in the third. The fourth and final round Fonseca pressed as Hibbert continued with the awkward style. In the end the judges favored Fonseca’s aggression scoring the bout 39-37.

Commerce, California junior welterweight Angel Rodriguez (7-0, 7 KOs) scored a second round knockout over Alfredo Diaz (10-13, 9 KOs). Rodriguez attacked early on and dropped Diaz in the opening round. Following up in the second round, Rodriguez finished off Diaz scoring a second knockdown as the ringside inspector promoted the referee to stop the fight.

In a super lightweight bout, Stephanie Simon (2-0) from Burbank won a hard fought unanimous decision over Tanisha Lopez (1-1, 1 KO). Simon used her distance and boxed the majority of the fight, Lopez pressed without success as Simon worked off the jab and countered solidly. It was all Simon boxing, staggering Lopez late in the fight, Simon worked her way to the decision.


The judges scored the bout 60-54, 60-54, & 59-55.

Super flyweight Jesus Diego (3-0, 2 KO) scored a third knockout over Marcus DeCamp (0-6) of Michigan. Diego attacked DeCamp dropping him with a hard left hook to the body as the referee reached a ten count at 1:17.

In the opening bout from Thunder Studios in Long Beach, California. Women’s lightweight Carson Crawford (1-0) of Culver City, California wins her professional debut with a majority decision over Archana Sharma (3-3, 2 KOs) as they dished it out in going the distance. It was Sharma putting the pressure staying busy early but Crawford adapted and worked off the jab boxing effectively. The fourth and final round it was Crawford pressing but Sharma gave her all she can handle in going the distance.


Scores were 39-37, 39-37, & 38-38.
