San Diego’s own Giovani “Gallo De Oro” Santillan and Jonny “Magic” Mansour hosted an open workout for media and fans on Saturday at the Bomber Squad Boxing Academy in El Cajon, Calif. The pair showcased the talent that will be on full display this Saturday, May 18 at Pechanga Arena in San Diego as Santillan faces Brian Norman in a 12-round, welterweight bout in the co-main event and Mansour makes his professional debut in a four round, lightweight bout against Anel Dudo.
Both San Diego natives are clearly fit and ready for their upcoming bouts, and they are excited to have the chance to perform in front of friends, family and supporters on the undercard of Top Rank Boxing's packed show, which Emanuel Navarrete and Denys Berinchyk are headlining.
Santillan is fighting for the third time in the last two years at Pechanga Arena so the pro boxing veteran had some words of wisdom for Mansour as he prepares for his first pro fight, and the former amateur standout was pumped to get the chance to train alongside the undefeated pro.
Santillan’s father and trainer Memo Santillan and Mansour’s coach Berlin Kerney were on site as well as the two boxers ran through a fun workout for those in attendance.
Here are some of the thoughts Santillan and Mansour had to share about their upcoming fights:
Giovani Santillan
“I feel great. I’m ready. I’m excited to be putting on a show in front of San Diego again. This will be my third time at Pechanga and I feel like it gets better every time.”
"It’s an honor to be fighting on a card like this. Navarrete is going for a world title in his fourth division. We’ve got great young fighters like Jonny and Emiliano Vargas on this card."
"It’s exciting (to be fighting in San Diego), especially coming off of my last victory. I’m excited to show everybody that I’m going to keep that going. The same type of performance I put on in my last fight, I’m looking to do that in this fight. I’ve been working very hard for this fight. I’m ready.”
“Fans are going to see a great fight. I’m going up against another undefeated guy in Brian Norman. These are the type of fights that I’m looking for, top opposition so I can showcase what I can really do.”
Jonny Mansour
“I’m feeling great. It’s exciting and there are a lot of emotions that come with it, but I’m focused and just ready to showcase my skills in front of my friends and family in my hometown. Making my pro debut at home is something that I always pictured as a young kid, being able to start out in my hometown and to be on a great platform like ESPN+ is a big opportunity and I feel like I’m ready for this. I’ve been working for this my whole life. It’s 15-16 years of hard work and it’s time to do it.”
“It’s great to surround myself with people like Giovani. He’s 32-0. He’s doing big things in the professional boxing world. It’s amazing, it motivates me and inspires me, looking up to people like him. He’s a legend in San Diego in the sport of boxing. For me to come right behind him, to be able to work right here with him. He’s a nice humble guy, it’s a great. I love to pick his brain and pick up on some things too.”
“Fans should expect to see a magic show on Saturday night. My nickname is magic because I’m very elusive inside the ring. I hit and don’t get hit.”
