Jose Zepeda Takes on Josue Vargas Saturday Night in New York

.

La Puente, California's Jose "Chon" Zepeda will be looking for the 35th win of his career next Saturday, when he faces Puerto Rican Josué "Prodigy" Vargas at the Hulu Theater at New York's legendary Madison Square Garden, taking the WBC Silver Super lightweight World Championship and heading a Top Rank and Zanfer card.

Zepeda (34-2-0, 26 ko's) has won four fights since contesting the WBC Super Lightweight World Championship against Jose Carlos Ramirez, to whom he fell by majority decision, in February 2019.

His rival, "Prodigy" Vargas (19-1-0, 9 ko's) is a left-handed fighter who was in the qualifying process towards the Rio 2016 Olympic Games and is not undefeated because the only defeat that appears in his record, was by disqualification, in his seventh professional fight, for giving a blow to the back.

Zepeda, 32, and Vargas, 23, will star in New York's Madison Square Garden, a fight that is expected to be action-based, in a duel of strategies and great pace.

In his most recent fight, the "Chon" defended his Silver world championship for the first time, beating Henry Lundy by points. The title was obtained by knocking out Ivan Baranchyk in 7 rounds, in October 2020, in a fight that had eight falls, as each fighter visited the canvas on four occasions.

Vargas, meanwhile, beat Willie Shaw by unanimous decision in the only fight he has made this year, last April in Florida.

Currently, Josh Taylor is the unified Super Lightweight World Champion, recognized by all four bodies (WBC, WBA, IDF and WBO), and the winner of this contest can be contested in the first months of next year.

It will be the first time that "Chon" Zepeda fights at Madison Square Garden, where "Prodigy" Vargas has already performed three times, in addition to five other times in the New York area, so the large Puerto Rican community in these lands, and their constant participation in the square, will be factors that incline the public to support Vargas.
