Munguia Rally's to Win

Tijuana’s undefeated former world champion Jaime Munguia (42-0, 32 KOs) was back in action as him and Sergiy “The Technician” Derevyanchenko (14-5, 10 KOs) from Ukraine went to battle Saturday night at the Toyota Arena in Ontario, California in headlining live on DAZN.


Starting out with a vicious exchange in the opening round, Munguia and Dereveyanchenko went right at it as Dereveyanchenko connected with a pair of right hands. Continuing where they left off, Munguia and Dereveyanchenko kept trading heavily in the second. In the third, Dereveyanchenko had Munguia pinned up against the ropes and backing him most of the round, but the Mexican finished the round connecting inside with the left hook to the body. Sticking the jab and beginning to keep his distance in the fourth, Munguia seemed more poised as kept Dereveyanchenko away timing him with solid shots.


Dereveyanchenko had his best moment in the fifth as he staggered Munguia, the Mexican held on for dear life as he bought time with the clinching. Munguia appeared more composed in the sixth as he boxed and kept Dereveyanchenko at bay, but the Ukrainian kept pressing and making it rough for Munguia. Fighting off his backfoot in the seventh, Munguia boxed and was sticking the jab, but Dereveyanchenko connected with a hard left hook. The fighting continued inside in the eighth as Munguia was on the receiving end of a headbutt and Dereveyanchenko’s knee appeared to nearly hit the canvas.


Munguia boxed and kept his distance in the ninth as Derveryanchenko was backing and appeared to be tiring but was swinging wildly at an opening. Dereveyanchenko came out boxing and displayed flash early in the tenth and outworked Munguia throughout the round. Late in the championship rounds, there was a sense of urgency from Munguia as he chased with Dereveyanchenko boxing confidently making it tough, but Munguia was rallying. Sensing urgency in the final round, Munguia sent Dereveyanchenko to the canvas with a crunching body shot as he got up. The Mexican began to rally attacking Dereveyanchenko with shots on the inside, the Ukrainian survived and made it to the final bell.


After twelve hard fought rounds, the judges scored the fight 115-112, 114-113, and 114-113 as Munguia pulls off the highly competitive unanimous decision.


Mosley Scores KO Win




Super welterweights Shane Mosley Jr. from Las Vegas and D'Mitrius Ballard of Temple Hills, Maryland squared off in the co-feature bout.


Mosley Jr. (19-4, 10 KO’s), the son of former world champion “Sugar” Shane Mosley, boxed in the opening round. For Ballard (21-1-1, 13 KO’s), it was his first time back since his defeat to Jaime Munguia, as he was on the receiving end of a headbutt in round two. Things began to pick up in the third round as Mosley and Ballard began to let their hands go. Some clinching going on in the fourth as the Mosley and Ballard mixed it up on the inside, creating clinches with their long arms. Continuing to fight at close quarters inside in the fifth, Mosley and Ballard exchanged shots and in the closing seconds of the round, Mosley sent Ballard to the canvas with a left hook, right hand combination.


In the sixth, the fight continued inside as Mosley and Ballard kept letting their hands go. Mosley finished Ballard in the seventh with a series of unanswered punches prompting referee Thomas Taylor to step in and stop the fight at


Mayeli Flores Defeats Former Champion Juarez


Mexico, City’s Mayeli Flores (10-1-1, 3 KO’s) won an entertaining eight round unanimous decision over former world champion Mariana “La Barbie” Juarez (55-13- 4, 19 KO’s) of Mexico, City in a women’s super-bantamweight bout. Flores took it to Juarez from the start, outworking and beating her to the punch in the early rounds. In the fourth, Flores kept pressuring backing Juarez to the ropes as the former world champion appeared very sluggish.


Flores was the fresher fighter in the fifth as she continued to outwork and outland a bleeding Juarez. It was all Flores in the sixth as she kept up the pressure and displaying relentlessness taking it to Juarez. La Barbie could not keep Flores off her in the seventh as she backed her to ropes and continues to let the hands go. Juarez was fading in the eighth and final round as Flores kept coming but managed to make it to the final bell.


After eight rounds, the judges scored the bout 80-72, 79-73, and 79-73.


Ricardo Sandoval Decisions Rocco Santamauro


Local flyweight Ricardo Sandoval won a hard-fought unanimous decision over a very game Rocco Santamauro of Los Angeles in the DAZN opening bout.


Sandoval (22-2, 16 KO’s) from nearby Rialto, California came out aggressive as Santamauro (22-2, 6 KO’s) hinted to referee Ray Corona about a headbutt in the opening seconds of the fight, Sandoval kept the pressure. A thudding right hand by Sandoval in the second got Santamauro’s attention as Sandoval continued to bring the pressure. Starting off where he left off, Sandoval landed huge punches in the third as Santamauro was beginning to feel the power. In the fourth, Sandoval kept up the pace as Santamauro’s face was beginning to swell up. At the halfway mark in the fifth, Santamauro was beginning to fade as Sandoval kept finding openings and break him down.


Exchanging to begin the sixth, with Santamauro getting his second wind he fought at fast pace with Sandoval. The following round in the seventh, Sandoval and Santamauro mixed it up as Santamauro appeared to be game. Stalking in the eighth, Sandoval stayed on top of Santamauro as he kept his distance and clinched at the opportunity. Late in the fight in the ninth, Sandoval was in control but there was still fight left in Santamauro. On the hunt and pressuring, Sandoval was lurking in the tenth and final round as Santamauro jabbed and kept his distance. Continuing to pressure, Sandoval worked his way to the decision win.


The judges scored the bout 98-82, 96-94, and 96-94.


Other Bouts


San Diego’s featherweight prospect Jorge Chavez won a six round unanimous decision over Christian Lorenzo of Los Angeles. Chavez (7-0, 5 KO’s) attacked from the opening bell landing heavily on Lorenzo (3-5, 1 KO). Continuing to land heavy, Chavez controlled the pace as he closed the round aggressively, unloading a series of punches on Lorenzo. Coming out aggressive to begin the third, Chavez cornered Lorenzo and attacked as he dictated the pace.


In the fourth, Chavez continued to outwork Lorenzo and dictate the fight. Coming out for the fifth, Chavez kept bringing the pressure as Lorenzo valiantly mixed it up. The sixth and final round, saw Chavez finish strong outworking the fading Lorenzo in route to a decision win.


After completing six rounds, all three judges scored the bout 60-54.


In the opening bout from the Toyota Arena in Ontario, California Anthony Saldivar (4-0, 2 KO) scored a second-round knockout over Jerome Clayton (2-2-1, 2 KO’s) of Louisiana. It was a fast-paced opening round as Saldivar and Clayton displayed some flash. Exchanging in the second, a short right hand by Saldivar dropped Clayton, later in the round Clayton hit the canvas a second time as he got up again. Saldivar finished Clayton knocking him down for a third time as referee Jack Reiss waived the bout at 2:01
