The Problem Child, Jake “El Gallo de Dorado” Paul (12-1, 7 KOs) proved his status as a legitimate title contender in the cruiserweight division tonight in front of a record-breaking crowd at the Honda Center, as Paul vs Chavez Jr. set biggest boxing gate in the history of the arena, live on DAZN pay-per-view.
Paul showcased his sharpest performance to date with a dominant unanimous decision victory over Mexico’s former world champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (54-7-1, 34 KOs) in their 10-round cruiserweight clash. From the opening bell, Paul controlled the pace with a crisp jab, punishing body work, and an improved inside game that left Chavez Jr. hesitant and outworked. Paul landed clean combinations and even utilized a new weapon, the right uppercut, against the seasoned former WBC middleweight champion. While Chavez Jr. rallied in the final rounds, it was too little, too late, as Paul earned the clear decision on the judges’ scorecards (99-91, 98-92, 97-93).
With the win, Paul not only silenced critics but called his shot, eyeing top names like Gilberto 'Zurdo' Ramirez, Badou Jack, Anthony Joshua, and Gervonta 'Tank' Davis for future mega-fights.
In the co-main event WBO & WBA unified cruiserweight champion Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez (48-1, 30 KOs) vs. Cuba’s former IBF & WBA cruiserweight world champion and WBA mandatory challenger Yuniel Dorticós (27-3, 25 KOs). From the opening bell, both fighters came out firing, trading heavy shots. The fight went the distance, and after 12 grueling rounds, the judges declared a unanimous decision win for still unified cruiserweight champion Ramirez (117-110, 115-112 x2).
Also on the main card, undefeated Mexican welterweight standout Raul “Cugar” Curiel (16-0-1, 14 KOs) faced Uruguay’s fellow undefeated sensation Victor “Latigo” Rodriguez (16-1-1, 9 KOs) in a 10-round welterweight battle at 147 lbs. Curiel dominated from the opening bell, putting the power and pride of Mexican boxing on full display. He closed the show in the fourth round with a clean knockout of Rodriguez, preserving his undefeated record and handing Rodriguez his first-ever loss.
The main card also featured MVP’s Avious “Tha Underdog” Griffin (17-1, 16 KOs) against New Jersey’s welterweight standout Julian “Hammer Hands” Rodriguez (24-1, 15 KOs) in a 10-round welterweight showdown at 147 lbs. Following a tense exchange at the pre-fight press conference, Griffin and Rodriguez entered the ring with something to prove. The bout turned into an intense, back-and-forth battle that pushed into the final round, but with just moments left on the clock, Rodriguez landed a punishing shot, securing an explosive knockout victory over Griffin.
Opening the Paul vs. Chavez Jr. pay-per-view main card, 22-year-old undefeated WBA International lightweight champion Floyd “Kid Austin” Schofield (19-0, 13 KOs) faced former IBF super featherweight world champion Tevin Farmer (33-9-1, 8 KOs) in a 10-round lightweight battle at 135 lbs. Schofield wasted no time making a statement, flooring Farmer three times, before finishing him halfway into the opening round to secure the WBA regional title by knockout. This is the first such defeat of Farmer’s career and Schofield's seventh first-round knockout.
In a triumphant return to the boxing ring after more than 12 years, former UFC champion and International Boxing Hall of Famer Holly “The Preacher’s Daughter” Holm (34-2-3, 9 KOs) delivered a masterclass performance under the Most Valuable Promotions banner. Headlining the preliminary card, Holm faced MVP’s previously undefeated Mexican prospect Yolanda “Pitayita” Vega (10-1, 1 KO) in a 10-round lightweight bout at 137 lbs. From the opening bell, Holm’s championship pedigree was undeniable, using superior footwork, timing, and veteran ring IQ to control the pace and land sharp, punishing combinations. As each round progressed, she sharpened her attack, overwhelming Vega with clean, precise left hands and slick movement. Holm swept the scorecards with a unanimous 100-90 decision, handing Vega the first loss of her career and reminding the boxing world why she’s considered one of the greatest of all time. With her return bout now behind her, Holm expressed interest in mega-fights against Stephanie Han, Amanda Serrano, or Katie Taylor, signaling her intentions to pursue a world title in a fourth weight class, this time under the MVP banner.
The preliminary card also featured an 8-round welterweight bout contested at 147 lbs with Golden Boy’s undefeated former Team USA member Joel Iriarte (8-0, 7 KOs) vs. Las Vegas, Nevada’s Kevin “Thunderstorm” Johnson (12-7, 8 KOs). Iriarte displayed impressive composure and control throughout, unleashing relentless flurries that kept Johnson on the defensive. Though Johnson showed grit and durability, delivering sharp body shots, Iriarte’s dominance was clear. For the first time in his professional career, Iriarte went the distance and walked away with a unanimous decision victory (78-74, 80-72, 79-74).
MVP’s 2x US national amateur champion and rising star Alexander “Alley Cat” Gueche (8-0, 5 KOs) faced American powerhouse and 4x US national amateur champion Vincent “The Beast” Avina (8-2-1, 7 KOs) in a high-stakes 8-round featherweight showdown contested at 124 lbs. At just 19 years old, Gueche showcased maturity and ring IQ, using his distance and power to control the pace against the 24-year-old Avina. Despite a spirited effort and late-round pressure from Avina, it was Gueche’s dominance that shone through. After eight competitive rounds, the judges scored it decisively in Gueche’s favor (80-72 x2, 79-73), awarding him a unanimous decision victory and another statement win in his young, undefeated career.
2024 US Olympian and Houston, Texas's Joshua Edwards (3-0, 3 KOs) faced Chicago, IL's Dominicc Hardy (6-4, 4 KOs) in a 6-round heavyweight bout during the preliminary card. With a show-stopping performance, Edwards secured a dominant knockout victory over Hardy with just 2:08 left in the first round, further cementing his status as one of boxing’s most powerful, undefeated heavyweight fighters.
Also featured on the preliminary card was Golden Boy’s Victor Morales (20-1-1, 10 KOs) vs. former WBA super featherweight world champion Rene Alvarado (35-16, 22 KOs) in a 10-round super featherweight bout at 130 lbs Alvarado took early control of the fight, and after 10 full rounds, Alvarado earned the unanimous decision (96-94, 99-91 x2) win.
Opening the preliminary card, LA native John “Scrappy” Ramirez (15-1, 9 KOs) defeated Houston, Texas’ Josue Jesus Morales (33-19-5, 14 KOs) and after 8 rounds by unanimous decision (79-73, 80-72 x2).
