Results From Tijuana

In a hotly contested duel, from power to power, from you to you, from give and take, Joselito Velazquez and Carlos Mejia tied in one of those verdicts that is justified, because neither of them deserved to lose. Velazquez (13-0-1, 9 KO's) came out to fight with great determination and speed, with variety in his offense and at a great pace. Mejia (6-2-1, 1 KO) not only withstood Joselito's best shots, but was accurate and forceful on the counterattack.

Former Mexican Olympian Joselito Velazquez imposed talent and aggressiveness, but was very vulnerable defensively. The "Grillo" Mejia repeatedly reached the face of his opponent, and when he got to the middle distance, he put power blows that came to hurt him.

Joselito tried to impose his fist power and keep the fight short, and while he connected in quantity and with great variety, the "Grillo" was a masterful counterpuncher.

Velazquez visited the canvas twice, Mejia on one occasion. And in the same rounds in which someone fell, the dominance was alternate.

The fight, which went to 8 rounds at Flyweight, was very dynamic and even during the last minute, with Mejia already with a battered face and Velazquez losing mobility, they kept exchanging punches.

The judges' cards did not define a winner, because while one card scored 77-76 for Carlos Mejia, two judges scored 76-76, so the final result was a draw.

Surely, the Tijuana Boxing Commission registered this fight to consider it among the nominees for "Fight of the Year", because it had all the ingredients for it: Rhythm, emotion, exchange of blows, falls and emotion from the first to the last round
