Callum Walsh dominated gatekeeper Carlos Ocampo over 10 one-sided rounds at the Meta Apex Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada during the inaugural Zuffa boxing (Z01) event.

The two combatants came out throwing bombs in the first round, but extremely intermittently. Powerful combinations were thrown by each, followed by long periods of inactivity, then bombs again. The fight settled into a pattern where a very confident Walsh, with his hands down, would pound Ocampo and then move and reset. An odd moment came in the sixth when Walsh’s glove touch the canvas after a left hook from Ocampo hooked Walsh behind the right shoulder. In the ninth, Ocampo was deducted a point for a low blow.

The scoring was a formality as the judges had it 98-90 x 2 and 97-91 all for Walsh who improves to 16-0, 11 KOs. Ocampo slides to 38-4, 26 KOs.

In the co-main event, Mexican Olympian Misael Rodriguez showed what pedigree is all about when he stepped in the ring against the “Native Nightmare”- Austin Deanda, who had no amateur experience. Rodriguez did as he pleased, walking, Deanda down and landing a variety of well-placed hard shots. After the fourth round, Deanda complained of double vision. A short conference between referee Thomas Taylor and the ringside physician resulted in a stoppage between rounds, leading to Rodriguez raising his record to 16-0, KOs. Deanda loses his first at 17-1, 8 KOs.

In an all-action war, Julian “Hammer Hands” Rodriguez had to rely on ring movement and defense, as well as his punching power to overcome a relentless “Sugar” Cain Sandoval in a 10-round war. Rodriguez landed plenty of tremendous punches, but could barely dent the iron chinned Sandoval. For his part, Sandoval kept the pressure on but was simply outgunned throughout. The judges saw it fairly one-sided at 99-91 x 2 98-92 all for Rodriguez who moves to 25-1, 15 KOs. Sandoval drops his first at 17-1, 15 KOs.

It took until the fifth fight of the night for someone to hit the canvas on the Z01 card. Featherweight Omar Trinidad dropped Max Ornelas with a stiff jab in the second round.. a left hook from Trinidad turned the trick again in the third, as Ornelas rose with blood pouring from his nose. Another counter left dropped Ornelas again near the end of the third, and again he survived. Surprisingly, Ornelas appeared to take the fourth round as Trinidad seemed to take his foot off the gas.

Ornelas threw a right hand late in the 9th which caused his shoulder to dislocate right at the end of the round. Referee. Thomas Taylor came within an eyelash of stopping the fight between rounds when he decided to let it go on with the encouragement of the corner. Early in the 10th, another thrown right hand caused another shoulder dislocation and an immediate stoppage. The time was :30 Of the 10th. Trinidad moves to 20-0-2, 14 KOs. Ornelas falls to 17-3-1, 3 KOs. This goes down as the first stoppage in Zuffa boxing history.

Bantamweights Floyd Diaz and Guillermo Gutierrez took the measure of each other over eight hard fought rounds. Gutierrez was rocked in the second but made it out of the round. 16 months out of the ring due to a wrist injury and legal issues, did begin to show on Diaz as his work rate and overall output was intermittent, wild Gutierrez put in a solid, consistent effort. All three judges still saw it: 79-73 for Diaz, who moves to 14-0, 3 KOs. Gutierrez falls to 13-3, 1 KO.

Bantamweights Emiliano Cardenas and Marcus Harris battled it out over six hard-fought rounds. Cardenas looked in tough early as he sustained a purple mouse under his right eye and was rocked in the middle rounds. He maintained his composure however, and took over down the stretch. The judges saw it: 60-54 x 2 and 58-56 all for Cardenas, who moves to 10-0, 4 KOs. Harris drops his second bout at 7-2, 5 KOs.

Lightweight Robert Meriwether III took on Cesar Correa in a scheduled six rounder. Meriwether was infinite levels above Correa in this match. Hand speed, power, skill level. We’re all on display as Meriwether did as he pleased throughout, sending Correa’s mouthpiece flying in the second round. If nothing else, Correa showed heart and guts despite being completely outclassed and hurt on several occasions. Meriwether didn’t get discouraged, despite dislodging Correa’s mouthpiece again late in the fight, not being able to put his man down and Correa landing his own combinations intermittently. In the end, the judges saw it: 60-54 x 2 and 59-55, all for Meriwether III, now 10-0, 4 KOs. Correa.los s his first ist at 5-0, 4 KOs.

Highly touted former amateur star Troy Nash took on fellow undefeated Jaycob Ramos in the first ever fight under Zuffa boxing at the Meta Apex in Las Vegas tonight.

(Zuffa has decided to recognize boxing’s original eight weight classes with no junior or super divisions. These two combatants weighed in at 128 lb, 2 lb over the traditional featherweight limit of 126, therefore they were labeled as lightweights.)

For his part, Ramos didn’t read the script which had him as a big underdog despite his undefeated record. He was extremely competitive, coming forward and trying his best to match or even out throw and outland Nash. Ramos especially concentrated on the body more so than Nash did. The judges saw it as follows: 59-55 x 2 and 58-52 all for Nash, who moves to 6-0-1, 1 KOs, while Ramos falls to 4-0, 1 KO.
